Kyatiri House

Heavy brick walls in north-south direction structure the house into four distinct segments, each with its own character and use. The walls not only sub-divide the house but also protect it from the low morning and evening sun, thereby allowing for maximum transparency and cross-ventilation towards north and south.

The primary structural material of the building is steel. Anchored to the foundations, hollow steel-brick composites are embedded inside the thick brick walls which rise up to support the steel framed roof. Floors are finished with cream-coloured terrazzo which was cast and ground before construction of the walls in order to allow for a seamless finish. The largely glazed north and south facades are accentuated by eucalyptus plank panels. Roofs are clad with cream-coloured metal sheets and finished on the underside with a pine tongue and groove ceiling.
